Rough, calloused hands and elbows are common especially in the fall and winter seasons. The hands, in particular, are prone to drying out because we wash our hands frequently. Excessive hand washing often results in wrinkly, rough, scaly skin that looks so much older than the rest of our bodies.

The good news is that you don’t need to spend a small fortune on designer lotions and creams to soften alligator skin. Ingredients that are available in your pantry right now could help nourish and soothe overly dry hands.

Olive Oil and Sugar Scrub

The key to soft, youthful-looking skin is regular exfoliation. The concept applies for hands as well. A one-minute hand scrub is all you need to banish dead skin cells and smooth out wrinkles in your hands.

To create the olive oil and sugar hand scrub, get a clean mixing bowl. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of regular sugar. Olive oil helps hydrate and nourish the skin from within while sugar grains slough off dead skin cells effectively. Just mix the ingredients together until it turns into a thick paste.

Get a dollop of the mixture and in a slow, circular motion, massage each hand with the scrub. Concentrate on parts that are really rough and scaly to soften and uncover healthy skin. Massage each hand for at least 30 seconds, rinse well with warm water, and pat dry.

Overnight Treatment

If you want intense hydration, try this treatment. Get any massage or body oil of your choice and a pair of terry cloth gloves or even socks. We recommend using extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, or sunflower oil because they are super nourishing on the skin!

Just add a few drops of your favorite body oil on the palms of your hands, work it slowly on the entire hands, and give yourself a mini massage. After you’re done, wrap up your oil-covered hands with gloves or socks and leave it overnight. You will wake up to the softest pair of hands ever! If you don’t have body or massage oils on hand, you can substitute the oil with Vaseline.

Milk and Potatoes Hand Mask

Did you know potatoes are great for soothing very dry skin? This treatment requires 2 potatoes and ¼ cup of full-cream milk. Boil the potatoes for several minutes and mash it in a mixing bowl. Incorporate the milk in the mashed potatoes until you get a smooth paste. Let the mixture cool slightly.

Once the mixture is still warm, get a dollop and massage on your hands. Coat every inch of your hands with the mashed potato and milk treatment and leave it on until it cools. Wash with warm water and slather the richest hand lotion you have in your vanity.

Honey and Lemon Hand Mask

This nourishing hand mask soothes and softens hands while also lightening the skin tone with regular use. In a clean mixing bowl, combine two teaspoons of honey with two tablespoons of lemon juice. Add two teaspoons of baking soda and mix the ingredients together to create a runny paste.

With clean hands, apply the mixture and let it sit on your hands for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and finish off by applying your favorite hand lotion.
