Ah yes, gemstones, they are probably one of nature’s best gifts to mankind. They have colors that no man can ever replicate. Although there are man-made gemstones out there, nothing beats the real ones. That is why it is important that you know how to distinguish real gemstones from synthetic ones in order to avoid wasting your money.

It is believed that gemstones have been around our planet longer than humans. It was used by many kings and queens back in the olden days and are still one of the best jewelries that many people are wearing today. This is why when buying gemstones, it is important that you can tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not. So how can you identify them anyway?

In order to know a real gemstone from the not, you should identify them first. As you know there are natural, synthetic and imitated gemstones out there and if you don’t know how to look which one is which then most likely you will be buying the wrong one. Natural gemstones are made naturally by mother earth. They differ in color and clarity compared to other gemstones. Synthetic gemstones on the other hand are created in the laboratory while imitated gemstones are usually made out of plastic or any other cheap glass. They do not resemble the real gemstone’s cut or class once they are tested. Now in order to avoid mistakes when buying real gemstones, you should consider the following.

Generally, the color of gemstone is very important. Real ones are generally very clear but they can also have a medium tone, intense or saturated. If the color is too dark or muddy, then you might not be buying the right one. Keep in mind that if the gemstone is brighter, clearer and vivid in color, the better.

Gemstones are sold per weight and not by size. The prices are usually calculated per carat. Real gemstones are denser compared to others. Larger gemstones are rare and expensive.

Clarity is another important factor to consider when it comes to evaluating a gemstone. If they are clear, transparent and have no visible flaws, it usually has high value. Some gemstones like emerald and red tourmaline are usually clear enough to than other types of gems which makes them even more expensive.

The cut of a gemstone is very important since they are usually used in making jewelries. A cut should be done in a way that it adds beauty and not diminish its quality. Usually, a gemstone that reflects light very well is the best kind.

Buying gemstones should not be hard but it will help you well if you buy gemstones with the help of an expert or someone who can authenticate the genuineness of the gemstone. It is also important that you ask questions and not just focus on the gemstone alone.
