When using mild products, it may take weeks or months before you see any visible lightening. But they are much safer to use than strong bleaching creams and solutions.

The active ingredients normally used in drugstore spot-lightening products are licorice extract, retinol, and niacinamide. Soy-containing facial care products are also known to minimize the redness after recent breakouts.

Vitamin C is big among enthusiasts of skin-brightening products. Dermatologists warn of the instability of vitamin C, so you need to find high-quality formulations of “activated” vitamin C products to help lighten your acne spots.

Hydroquinone, another well-known bleaching agent, is used in several skin-lightening products, but there have been controversies about its safety for topical application. The chemical is banned in several countries because of its nasty side effects.

Use Natural Remedies to Gradually Lighten Dark Spots

Here are three ways to fight acne spots. Applying these natural remedies consistently for up to two weeks improves the clarity of your skin. The effect varies from person to person; it also depends on the level of scarring of the acne spot.

  1.  Wet the cotton ball with the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Place it over the dark acne spot for up to ten minutes. The lemon juice gently fades the dark spots and even prevents the formation of acne and pimples.
  2.  Make a paste consisting of water and baking soda. Leave the mixture on top of the dark spot for a minute before washing it off.
  3. ¼ cup of pureed fresh pineapple contains enough ascorbic acid to brighten your face and subsequently lighten dark spots.
