Foods That Protect From Ovarian Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, the new cases of ovarian cancer in the US reached 21,980 in 2014. An estimated 14,270 deaths from ovarian cancer was recorded last year in the US alone. Ovarian cancer ranks as the 5th most common cancer deaths in women.

The good news is, the kinds of food we eat cuts the risk of ovarian cancer. By making better food choices, it’s possible to prevent this chronic disease. That’s because some foods contain cancer-fighting compounds. These compounds might not cure cancer, but they could delay cancer growth. They can even cut the risk of developing certain cancers.

In a comprehensive research conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research found that plant-based foods showed the strongest links to preventing cancer. Foods like cruciferous vegetables and berries contain phytochemicals and antioxidants. These compounds help reduce the risk of cancer. Below are foods known to combat ovarian cancer:

Whole grains

Oats, barley, rye and brown rice contain phytochemicals. According to Oregon State University, the phytochemicals in whole grains are associated with lowering ovarian cancer risks. They are also rich in essential nutrients including fiber. Fiber is associated with lowering the risk of colon cancer. To maximize the benefits of whole grains, start replacing refined foods with whole grain varieties. Multiple studies suggest that foods made from refined flour increase the chances of developing cancer. Refined foods also lead to other diseases including diabetes and obesity.

Soy Products

Soy products are food derived from soy beans. According to several studies conducted by the Ovarian Cancer National Institute, a diet rich in soy products could reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. However, soybean is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. We recommend talking to your doctor about potential risks before adding more soy products to your diet.

If you want to boost your consumption of soy products, start replacing meat patties with soy burgers. You can also drink soy milk or snack on soy yogurt to prevent ovarian cancer. Apart from their cancer-fighting compounds, soy products are rich in vitamin B, omega-3 fatty acids, and dietary fiber.


Of all superfoods, onions are the most effective in fighting ovarian cancer. It’s also the most underrated. Red onions contain compounds like apigenin, anthocyanin, myricetin and quercetin. These all natural cancer-fighting nutrients shrink tumors and prevent cancer cell growth. Ideally, you want to eat raw red onions to reap its health benefits. Cooking the onions down will reduce its effectiveness by up to 30%. The best way to eat red onions for its cancer-fighting abilities is raw or lightly sautéed with olive oil.

Sea Bass

Sea bass and other fatty fishes contain high amounts of essential fats. Essential fatty acids prevent cardiovascular disease, artery disorders, and cancer. That includes ovarian cancer! Sea bass, in particular, is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Just eating at least six ounces of sea bass twice or thrice per day is enough to cut the risk of ovarian cancer significantly. If sea bass is not available, you can always take wild salmon as a substitute. Just like sea bass, wild salmon – not farmed – contains incredible levels of omega-3 fatty acids!
