Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers

Having mouth ulcers or sores can be very painful. It is even more painful when it is located in the gums and hinders your ability to eat or speak. Often times these ulcers appear when you least expect them to especially when you are extremely stressed. It could also be due to a deficiency in important nutrients that your body needs. Because of this it is important to know what you can do to prevent these sores from forming.

Mouth ulcers are sores that appear on the inside of the cheeks and in the mouth. They are also known as apthous ulcers which are very painful when drinking, brushing teeth and eating. Generally, mouth ulcers are harmless but if they remain in the mouth for more than two weeks then this should be considered alarming.

There are three types of mouth ulcers. One is the minor ulcers which are usually 2-8mm in diameter and usually disappears after 10 days to 2 weeks. The major ulcers are bigger and deeper compared to the minor ones. They usually take several weeks to heal and usually leaves scars. The third kind is called herpetiform ulcers which appear in clusters and usually by the dozens. These small sores are also seen as the size of pinheads.

Natural home remedies

Mouth sores are easily treated. They can be treated with home remedies as well and if in case you have mouth sores, you can use these home remedies to treat them.

Honey

Honey is basically a natural humectant. This is used to reduce scarring and at the same time helps hasten the growth of new tissues that the ulceration has destroyed. Honey also has anti-microbial properties and dabbing a honey mixed in turmeric can help relieve pain from the ulcers.

Coconut

Coconut oil and water are very helpful in treating mouth ulcers. The coconut water helps the body to cool down while the coconut oil helps reduce the pain of the ulcer. It also reduces the inflammation.

Water with salt

Take a glass of water with a pinch or two of salt. Allow the salt to dissolve and then use it as mouth wash. This will help clean the ulcers and help it heal.

Raw tomatoes

Eating raw tomatoes can help. This helps clean the wounds that the ulcer caused.

Coriander leaves

Boil I cup of water with a teaspoon of coriander leaves. When the water is slightly warm, remove the leaves and use the water to gargle. Repeat this at least 3 times each day to clean the wounds.

Hot/Cold Water

This may be a bit uncomfortable but gargling warm water and then gargling with cold water afterwards can help relieve pain. Repeat this procedure at least twice a day until your ulcers heal.

There are so many ways in which you can treat your ulcers at home but if the ulcer becomes worse and does not show any signs of healing after three weeks, have it checked. It could be an underlying symptom of something else. Make sure to be alert about this.
