Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a group of disorders that affect the pelvic bone floor. The pelvic floor is composed of a sheet of muscles that pass from the rectum to the anal canal. The anal canal is surrounded by the anal sphincter complex.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is mostly caused by weak, tight or impaired sacroiliac joint, lower back, coccyx, or hip joints. When the tissues surrounding the pelvic organ becomes sensitive or irritated, it causes a variety of medical conditions. These conditions include fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, lower urinary tract disorders and defecatory dysfunction. In severe cases, pelvic floor dysfunction leads to sexual dysfunction.

Because pelvic floor dysfunction does not have severe symptoms, the treatment is focused on optimizing stool consistency. This helps in the passage of stool. Stress Relief

Tuck a pillow under your knees or lie on your side with a pillow between your legs. This helps keep the weight of your abdominal muscles away from your pelvic floor muscles.

Warm Compress

A warm compress works great to relieve muscle tension. Ideally, you want to use mild heat only. If the warm compress is too hot, place a towel between the skin and the compress. Leave the compress on the pelvic area for at least 15 minutes at a time. A warm compress paired with lying down with pillows tucked under the knees will relieve pelvic floor pains right away. So make it a habit to utilize both methods all the time.

Practicing Pelvic Floor Exercises

Certain movements trigger the relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles. These moves can help prevent muscle pains and spasms. It could also strengthen weak pelvic muscles. Proper Posture and Spinal Support

The weight of your abdominal muscles is on the pelvic muscles when you sit down or stand up. The weight gets heavier with every step you take. Proper posture helps relieve some of the weight from the abdominal muscles. When you sit down, maintain the curve in your lower back. This will eliminate pelvic tension.

You can also invest on a pelvic support cushion if you are always confined to a desk all day. This specialized cushion helps prevent pelvic stress.
