Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin. This condition is characterized by dry, itchy, irritated skin with rough, scaly patches. Psoriasis is a non-infectious disorder that affects people between the ages of 15 to 40 years old.

Psoriasis comes in different types: plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis. Unfortunately, scientists have yet to discover the cause and the cure for this condition. However, you can use holistic remedies to calm the skin and reduce flare outs. Below are the best natural remedies for psoriasis:

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar softens the skin and reduces inflammation. It has potent antiseptic properties that speed up healing and prevent itchiness. To use apple cider vinegar as a treatment for psoriasis:, mix about 1 teaspoon of the vinegar with a cup of warm water. Apply the solution directly to lesions and massage it in for a minute or two. Rinse with water and pat dry. You can also add about ½ cup of apple cider vinegar on a tub of water and take a warm soak.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents that protect from infections and inflammation. This spice also speeds up healing, reduces redness and scaling. We recommend getting a chili cream from an Asian pharmacy or from your local medical store. This cream is formulated with cayenne to heal lesions. Just avoid applying the cream on broken skin!

Cold-Pressed Castor Oil

Castor oil hydrates very dry skin and soothes inflammation. It will improve the skin texture and protect from infections. Just apply a few drops of the oil on problematic parts of the body. You can also mix the oil with a teaspoon of baking soda to make a paste. Apply the paste to the lesions and leave it on overnight. Do this every night for a few weeks to heal the skin. Again, do not apply the mixture on broken skin!

Baking Soda

Baking soda relieves itchiness, eases inflammation, and reduces skin scaling. Just mix a teaspoon of baking soda with 4 teaspoons of water in a small mixing bowl. Make a loose paste and apply to the affected area using a sterilized cloth. Leave the paste to dry then it will fall off on its own.

Epsom Salt Bath

A relaxing soak should calm irritated skin and reduce psoriasis flare outs. Epsom salt will relieve itchiness and reduce skin scales. Mix about a cup of Epsom salt in your bath water. Then, add a cup of full cream milk to hydrate the skin. Take a 20-minute soak and then pat yourself dry. Follow up with a good moisturizer for best results.

Buttermilk

According to Ayurvedic medicine, buttermilk is an excellent treatment for psoriasis. Drinking two glasses of buttermilk every day should reduce flare outs and soothe inflamed lesions.

Bitter Gourd Juice

Just like buttermilk, bitter gourd juice is an excellent treatment for psoriasis. Just mix about a teaspoon of bitter gourd juice with a teaspoon of lime juice. Take this mixture on an empty stomach every day to treat psoriasis.
