Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the small joints. This recurring condition is characterized by acute pain, swelling, intense tenderness, and inflammation of the affected area. During a flare-out, the joints in the toes, hands, knees, and/or ankles will swell up and become extremely painful.
The exact cause of this condition is unknown. Most scientists believe that high level of uric acid is one of the most common triggers of a gout flare up. Other possible causes are genetics, excessive protein intake, lack of exercise, and excessive stress. Gout is also linked to other diseases including hypertension and diabetes. Natural Remedies for Gout
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar soothes inflammation caused by gout. It works by neutralizing the body’s own inflammatory response. Apart from reducing swelling of the joints, it also minimizes pain associated with gout. To use apple cider vinegar as a treatment for gout, get a glass of water and dilute a teaspoon of the vinegar. Stir well and drink. Take this tonic three times daily.

Ginger Root
Ginger root contains a potent mix of anti-inflammatory compounds gingerols and shogaol. These compounds reduce swelling, minimize pain, and cut inflammation. To use ginger root as a treatment for gout, just boil fresh ginger root with water and take the solution as a tea. You can also chew on fresh slices of ginger every day.
Baking Soda
Because baking soda reduces uric acid in the body, it is an excellent remedy for gout flare-ups. Simply mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink the solution to soothe gout pains. Drink the solution three to four times daily for best results.
Epsom Salt
A soothing soak helps cut down pain and swelling from a gout flare up. A soak alleviates pain and tension from painful muscles and inflamed joints. To make a relaxing soak, just pour two cups of Epsom salt to your bath water and soak your body for 15 to 20 minutes. Do this once every week for best results.

Avoid High Purine Foods
Purine is a substance converted into uric acid by the body. To minimize the occurrence of gout, reduce your consumption of high purine foods like organ meats, beverages with high fructose corn syrup, red meats, legumes, and certain nuts.
Proper Hydration
Studies show that increased water intake effectively cuts down the recurrence of gout attacks. Drinking enough water daily discourages the formation of urate crystals in the joints. We recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily if you suffer from gout attacks.
Weight Control
Excess weight puts too much strain on the joints. This makes gout attacks even more painful. To minimize pain and lower uric acid levels, maintain a normal weight. Keeping a normal weight also reduces the risk of developing gout complications, like diabetes and hypertension.
Resting
According to the Arthritis Foundation, give yourself a rest and stay off your feet during a gout attack. Elevate the joints by propping a pillow when lying down. You want to reduce the pressure on the joints during a gout attack so do not walk or engage in strenuous activities.
