Lake Como is a picturesque lake located in Lombardy, Italy. The lake originated from glaciers that melted off thousands of years ago. It stretches over 146 kilometers and is over 400 meters deep. Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and is also one of the most popular attractions in Italy. Since the Roman times, Lake Como has been a favorite vacation spot among the rich and powerful. Today, Lake Como presents an array of outdoor activities that will appeal to everyone. If you are planning a trip to Lake Como, we encourage you to add these activities to your itinerary:

Visit the Duomo

Duomo is Italian for a cathedral church. In Lake Como, you can check out a beautiful, 14th century cathedral. Featuring intricately carved stone statues, the cathedral façade nearly fills one side of Piazza Duomo. Once you enter the church, you will be wowed with Renaissance-style interiors complete with polychrome painting, gilded altars, and a carved main altar. Overhead is a massive 18th century dome, which you can explore by taking a long flight of stairs.

Riding a Cable Car

Enjoy a guide-less tour of Lake Como with an exciting cable car ride! The Argegno-Pigra cable car will take you 200 to 850 kilometers in the air, giving you a bird’s eye view of the stunning landscape below! The cable ride may be brief (about five to eight minutes) but it is surely an unforgettable way to discover the beauty of the lake. The cable car can hold 12 people and will travel along sloped paths.

A ride will set you back €2.90 and the return ticket costs €3.90. Discounts are given to children under 12 years old.

Water Activities

There are loads of exciting adventure sports and outdoor activities you can try on and off the lake. You can rent a skippered boat and go sailing, rent a jet ski or go windsurfing. You can also try kite surfing, kayaking, paragliding, parachuting, and horse riding at Lake Como. Really, as far as outdoor activities go, there is something for everyone at the lake. You can even learn to fly a seaplane for a truly memorable adventure!

Take a Ferry Ride

If you prefer a laidback tour of the lake, then we highly recommend going on a ferry ride at Lake Como. Good thing there are several companies that offer boat trips. The routes will cover the villages near the lake, including Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. You can go on stopovers, check out the sights, enjoy your gelato, or hang out at local cafés and people watch!

Sunset Dinner

For a romantic jaunt at Lake Como, how about taking your significant other for an intimate sunset dinner by the lake? Imagine finishing a sumptuous meal with a stunning view of the Italian sunset with Lake Como serving as the perfect backdrop. If you love seafood, you can request for a meal consisting of the day’s catch.

There are dozens of gardens and villas near the lake. Why not explore the sights, get to know the locals, and take lots of pictures during your vacation? You can either rent a private villa near the lake, check out the English-style gardens that feature a breathtaking view of Lake Como or visit Villa Balbianello for its fascinating collection of artifacts and polar expeditions.
