Natural Remedies for Diarrhea

On average, a bout of diarrhea only lasts for a few days. This ailment does not require any treatment or hospitalization. But if diarrhea persists for longer periods, then consider having yourself checked by a doctor. Apart from a bland diet, over the counter meds and proper hydration, you can treat diarrhea with the following remedies:

Yogurt

Yogurt is teeming with beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium. These microbes are a great remedy for diarrhea. By rebalancing the number of good bacteria in the gut, the gastrointestinal system is free from offending microbes that trigger the runs.

In a 200 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that beneficial bacteria from yogurt effectively reduced diarrhea caused by antibiotics. In fact, eating at least 2 bowls of yogurt per day provides noticeable relief.

Ginger

Ginger helps ease an upset stomach and treat food poisoning. It works by reducing cramping and gut irritation. This common spice is also an excellent treatment for diarrhea. It improves digestion and promotes the release of gastric juices.

To use ginger as a treatment for diarrhea, boil slices of fresh ginger root in a pot of water for 10 minutes. Strain and transfer a portion into a cup. Drink the liquid three times per day for best results. You can adjust the taste by adding honey and lemon.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are traditionally used to treat the runs. The seeds contain a concentrated amount of mucilage. Mucilage provides effective antidiarrheal effect.  To use Fenugreek seeds as a treatment for diarrhea, just mix a teaspoon of the seeds with a tablespoon of yogurt and chew very well. You can also combine roasted Fenugreek seeds with cumin seeds, add two tablespoons of yogurt. Consume the mixture twice or thrice per day for best results.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains antimicrobial agents that kill harmful gut bacteria dead. It provides temporary relief from diarrhea and stomach cramps. To use apple cider vinegar as a treatment for diarrhea, just mix a tablespoon in a glass of distilled water. Drink the solution twice or thrice daily for optimal relief.

Bananas

Bananas make a great alternative treatment for diarrhea. The fruit contains pectin, which is a water-soluble fiber. The fiber bonds with loose bowel to bulk up the stool. This fruit is also loaded with potassium. Potassium is a type of electrolyte that supports a variety of body functions. To treat diarrhea with banana, just eat a couple of ripe bananas every day until your condition improves.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea does more than just calm the nerves and induce sleep. It is also an effective treatment for diarrhea. The tea brings down intestinal inflammation and reduces abdominal cramps. To use chamomile tea for diarrhea relief, steep the tea in hot water. Add a teaspoon of peppermint leaves and strain the liquid. Drink the solution several times per day for optimal relief.

Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil is an excellent treatment for various health disorders including constipation, diarrhea, and colic. The oil will reduce intestinal inflammation and speed up recovery from diarrhea. To use black seed oil to treat diarrhea, mix about a teaspoon in a cup of plain yogurt. Consume the mixture twice per day until your condition has improved.
